Here’s a quick TL;DR of what’s below:
AGSA’s fifth edition is about engineering stickiness: how product, marketing and tech teams build apps users return to — and grow customer lifetime value.
Explore the decisions that turn acquisition into lasting growth, from first value and reliable experiences to relevant engagement and repeat usage.
Learn alongside Amplitude and OneSignal, and bring your toughest activation, retention and LTV questions.

By the time someone gives up on your app, you’ve already paid to win their attention and convinced them that you have something worth their time.
They arrived wanting to book a trip, move their money, buy something or be entertained, but somewhere between the download and the experience you promised, you lost them.
The uncomfortable part is that your acquisition report can still look excellent while this is happening. Installs are climbing, CPI is falling, and there’s a convincing case for increasing the budget.
Meanwhile, the people you worked so hard to bring in are leaving before they generate enough value to cover what it cost to acquire them.
How much of your next marketing budget will go towards replacing people you’ve already paid to reach? 👀
Answering that means following the user beyond the campaign report, into the onboarding steps, product decisions and technical failures that shape whether they stay. It also means getting the teams responsible for those experiences into the same conversation.
That’s exactly what we’re going to be talking our next App Growth Summit Africa: Engineering Stickiness: How Product, Marketing and Tech Teams Build High-LTV Apps in 2026.
What does it mean to engineer stickiness?
Stickiness develops when an app repeatedly delivers something useful, with enough consistency that returning becomes an easy decision.
Engineering it means connecting the promise that brought someone in, the experience that delivers on it and the reason they come back.
Think about a shopping app where someone places their first order using a discount. The campaign has converted, but the next purchase depends on whether delivery went smoothly, checkout was reliable and the app remembered their preferences.
The discount has done its job. The app now has to do its’s job.
Small mistakes can become expensive habits
Nothing says “we understand our customers” quite like sending someone a “Complete your purchase” notification ten minutes after they’ve paid. 😅
Behind that awkward message could be a delayed event, mismatched user identities or a journey without the right exit condition. What looks like a marketing mistake may need product, tech and measurement teams to fix it together.
That’s the engineering underneath stickiness: reliable events, connected customer data and experiences that respond to what someone has actually done.
Amplitude’s 2025 Product Benchmark Report found that 69% of products leading in first-week activation also led in three-month retention. This finding gives teams a useful starting point: investigate which early behaviours are associated with users staying, then test ways to help more people reach them.
For a shopping app, that might mean testing whether helping first-time buyers save relevant products increases second purchases, while measuring completed orders and contribution alongside engagement.
Make sure you’re engineering the right thing
If customers only return when another promo code lands, it’s worth asking whether you’ve built a useful habit or a discount programme with an app attached.
The test is whether repeat value survives beyond the incentive, at a cost the business can sustain. For teams operating across African markets, that also means examining results by market, device and network conditions.
Now, I would love to dig deeper into this with you here, but then what would we talk about at the event? 👀 You’ll have to join us for the fifth edition of App Growth Summit Africa, coming to Lagos on 6 November and Cape Town on 13 November.
Join Welcome Tomorrow and YOUKNOW Technologies, alongside partners Amplitude, Adjust and OneSignal, as we unpack what engineering stickiness actually takes. Bring your questions, your stubborn retention curves and that automated campaign nobody wants to take responsibility for. We’ll have plenty to talk about 😊.
